Graduating from hospice care is a concept that might seem unusual, but on rare occasions, it happens. Some individuals, against all odds, are determined to live and manage to turn their circumstances around. Hospice care, known primarily for providing comfort and support during end-of-life stages, also offers various benefits that can sometimes lead to unexpected improvements in a patient’s condition.

Studies have shown that in some cases, people actually get better while under hospice care. This improvement can be attributed to the holistic approach that hospice takes, focusing not just on physical symptoms, but also on emotional and spiritual well-being. The comprehensive support system can create an environment where patients feel more at peace, which can positively affect their overall health.

Not all individuals succumb to their illnesses in hospice. There are stories of resilience and unexpected recovery that can inspire others to hold on to hope and cherish the quality of life, whatever the circumstances. These narratives remind us that life can take surprising turns, and sometimes, the care and comfort provided by hospice can lead to renewed strength and vitality.

We are proud to feature a story of resilience and determination in the soul of Milton Whitten.

He was under the loving hospice care of our amazing Registered Nurse, Rita Estrada. Milton was only with us for 6 months until we graduated him.

He told us that he would sneak out of bed and use his walker to exercise up and down the halls against the request of the Assisted Living Facility.

Milton worked at Lockheed Martin as an Engineer and retired at the age of 69 as a Program Manager.

Milton keeps his mental game strong reading a weekly newsletter on Wall Street. And at the age of 93, he still trades and invests in stocks.

For recovery, Milton exercised on his indoor bicycle and did a lot of movements with his arm. He told us that he is determined to go over at least 100 years old. He currently has 9 grandchildren and grew tomatoes on the roof top patio.

We were very happy to throw Milton a small Graduation Party and gleaned from all the wisdom he happily shared. He is blessed to have the support of his children and the caring staff of his Assisted Living Facility.

“You might as well stay healthy or only other thing is, you die.” – Milton Whitten
